Relaxing

If you are getting stressed, anxious, or angry a lot you will need to learn some ways to relax and calm your mind and body.

This can take some practice and you will need to learn what works best for you.  Some people prefer lying down and using their imaginations to calm down, or going somewhere quiet, and some people need to do something really active to get the angry or anxious feelings out.

This page has some ideas for you to try out.  If you need calming ideas for sleep, go to this page on Sleep.

Active things

Sometimes we need to do really active stuff and get our bodies moving to help ourselves relax.  This might be if all the blood and adrenaline has built up in our muscles. Here are some ideas:

  • run
  • walk
  • jumping on trampoline
  • shooting hoops
  • dance

Calming things

Some people like to do quiet calming things and be away from other people, like these:

  • listen to music
  • do slow calm breathing
  • count to 100, or backwards from 100
  • read a book
  • go somewhere quiet
  • watch a favourite TV show
  • meditate or close your eyes and think about doing your favourite thing
  • yoga

Do something you enjoy to distract yourself from the unpleasant feelings.

It's always good to talk to someone about your feelings, but you might need to calm down yourself a bit first before you can do that.
